Where do I turn the water off when a pipe bursts?
At the meter, usually out near the front boundary of the block. Turn it clockwise until it stops, then open a low tap to drain what's left in the lines.
Why are flexi hoses behind vanities such a common burst?
They run at full mains pressure behind cabinets and vanities, and a split one pours litres a minute into the cupboard and across the floor. Renovated estate-era rooms carry the oldest ones.
Is the burst pipe mine to fix or Hunter Water's?
The meter is the line. Pipes through the house and yard are private plumbing, so they're ours to repair. A leak at or before the meter sits with Hunter Water.
Does a burst affect the hot water system too?
If the split is on a hot water line, turn off power to an electric unit or shut the gas control so the tank isn't heating while it's empty. Ring us either way.
What happens if a pipe bursts inside a wall?
Shut the water off first and leave the wall alone. Finding the exact spot is a detection job, then we open only what's needed and replace the failed section.
Do storms set off more burst pipes here?
They do, for a couple of reasons. Heavy coastal downpours put ground movement and storm load on lines running down the slope, and a surge through a corroded joint often finishes the job.
