Why the hot water stopped, simple causes first
A lot of "the system is dead" calls turn out to be a part worth a fraction of a replacement. These are the usual suspects, roughly in order of how much they cost to fix:
Power or gas supply
Element or thermostat failure
Tempering valve failure
Tank failure
Four checks you can safely do yourself
None of these cost anything, and none involve pulling a panel off a live unit.

Check the power
Find the hot water isolator near the unit and the breaker that feeds it. If the breaker has tripped, reset it once.

Check the gas
If you run bottled gas, confirm the bottle still has weight in it. Mains gas homes can check other gas appliances work.

Check the relief valve
A little water through the pipe on the tank's side during heating is normal. A constant trickle or a hot and dripping pipe is not.

Check the meter
On a Hunter Water connection, a meter creeping while every tap is off can mean a tank or line leaking somewhere you cannot see.
If the breaker trips a second time, or the tank is wet where it should be dry, leave the unit alone and ring us. Both faults are weekly visitors on estate-era units.
When a cold shower becomes an emergency call

No hot water questions
My taps run cold but the tank sounds like it is working. What now?
A heating fault and a delivery fault feel identical from the tap. A stuck valve, a failed tempering device or a blocked line can stop hot water reaching you. We test both ends.
Can I reset the unit myself before calling?
You can press the reset button on an electric unit once. If it trips again, leave it alone. Repeated tripping points to an element or thermostat fault that needs a licensed eye.
Do you work on all makes of hot water system?
